This scholarship was established by donations to the Matthew Flinders Statue Fund.

The object of the scholarship is to:

  • assist, encourage and promote knowledge, education links, and enduring ties between Australia and Britain;
  • promote international understanding and advance the academic development of students by enabling them to spend part of their degree overseas.


Two scholarships will be available each year, one for a British student  visiting Australia and one for a Flinders University student visiting Britain.

The scholarship value will be $5,000 subject to the availability of funding each year.


Applicants should:

  • Be full-time onshore Flinders University students enrolled in an undergraduate course in Australia participating in an exchange program in Britain, or
  • Be full-time onshore students enrolled in an undergraduate course in Britain participating in an exchange program at Flinders University; and
  • Enrolled in a full-time program of study at their host University while on exchange; and
  • Have successfully completed at least one year full-time equivalent of their undergraduate degree; and
  • Have a grade point average of 5.5 (Flinders students) or an average mark of at least 60/100 (British students).


The scholarship will be valid for one exchange program of 1-2 semesters duration.

The scholarship will be withdrawn if the subsidy holder ceases to meet the eligibility criteria specified above.


The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.


Scholarship recipients will be required to promote knowledge of their overseas experience to assist, encourage and promote knowledge, education links, and enduring ties between Australia and Britain. This may involve attending various public events as an ambassador and being featured in various publicity and marketing materials produced by Flinders University and/or the exchange university.

Recipients will be required to submit a report upon completion of their exchange.


Interested students should consult with their home University before applying to ensure that their proposed program of study is acceptable for credit towards their course. Applicants will not need to submit a separate application for this scholarship. An application to participate in the Flinders University Student Exchange program will constitute an application for the scholarship
