May Mills Scholarship for Women Rules

The purpose of the May Mills Scholarship for Women is to encourage women, who have experienced significant interruptions to their studies due to family responsibilities, to proceed to a research higher degree at Flinders University. The value of each scholarship will be $9,000.  The number to be awarded each year will be decided by the University. The May Mills Scholarship for Women will be offered to women to undertake a program of study that will qualify them for admission to a research higher degree.  Such studies may include Honours programs, postgraduate coursework studies or programs of bridging studies.

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for consideration for the award of a scholarship in any given year, applicants must: (a) be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia; and (b) be female; and (c) hold a Bachelor's degree of good standing; and (d) have experienced significant interruptions to their studies due to family responsibilities, requiring a break from study or a reduction in enrolment load; and (e) intend to proceed to a research higher degree at Flinders University on completion of the May Mills Scholarship for Women.

Applicants who do not hold an Honours degree must have been offered, or expect to be offered, admission to an Honours program at Flinders University. Applicants who hold an Honours degree must have been offered, or expect to be offered, admission to another Honours program or a program of postgraduate coursework or bridging studies that will qualify them for admission to a research higher degree.

SELECTION: The May Mills Scholarship for Women will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and the extent to which an applicant’s studies have been interrupted by family responsibilities. Selection will be made by the Scholarships Committee.

Scholarship holders who obtain other scholarships concurrent with the May Mills Scholarship for Women must immediately inform the Scholarships Officer.  Scholarship holders must retain such other scholarships and the Scholarships Committee will decide on the value of the May Mills Scholarship for Women after considering all circumstances.

TENURE: The value of each scholarship is $9,000.  This amount is payable in instalments in April and September. Scholarship holders must normally be enrolled on a full-time basis whilst they hold this scholarship.  A scholarship holder may enrol on a part-time basis if she can demonstrate that her personal circumstances prevent full-time study.  Such circumstances may include heavy care commitments, a disability or medical condition that precludes full-time study.

Subject to each scholarship holder making satisfactory progress in her studies and maintaining her enrolment in the particular program of study for which the scholarship was awarded, each scholarship will continue for the normal duration of the program of study, up to a maximum of 36 units, or 1 year of full-time study or its part-time equivalent.

If a scholarship holder does not maintain her enrolment in the particular program of study for which the scholarship was awarded, she will receive no further payments.
