CONSTANT GROWTH THE KEY TO LEAD ACADEMIC'S SUCCESS
Flinders University’s award-winning Associate Professor Shane Pill lives by the motto that he is ‘a work in progress’, highlighted through his constant drive to learn, teach and achieve.
A leading academic in sports education, Associate Professor Pill has adapted to modern teaching techniques and resources by embracing the use of technology to enrich learning and empower both students and staff.
“While the principles of teaching for effective learning remain the same, the possibility for anytime, anywhere, and just-in-time learning is now much more accessible and possible because of technology,” says Associate Professor Pill who has been teaching at Flinders since 2006.
“Now more than ever, we can more easily position ourselves as a knowledge curator and mapper so students can be the navigators, explorers and creators of their understanding. The educator no longer needs to be the holder and deliverer of information due to the level of digital connectivity of students.”
As a leader in his field, Associate Professor Pill has worked with national sporting organisations including Cricket Australia, the National Rugby League, Tennis Australia and the Australian Football League. He has also worked with state and national education bodies and presented at numerous national and international events and conferences.
Associate Professor Pill’s experience and progressive teaching ethos has led to an array of notable awards including the Australian Award for University Teaching in 2016 and 2021, an Australian Council for Health award, Physical Education and Recreation (South Australia) President’s Award for distinguished service to the profession in 2021 and many more.
When asked what he loves most about teaching, Associate Professor Pill explains it is the success of those around him that he finds so rewarding.
“I enjoy the opportunity to help people grow personally and professionally.”
“I also enjoy the creation of opportunities through education initiatives, and the enhancement of our existing education offerings.”
