Topic description
This topic introduces students to the psychological and sociological factors that influence health care, and explores theories that may assist understanding of these factors.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:
- develop in students a beginning understanding of psychological, sociological and lifespan factors that influence a range of health issues and contexts
- explore theories that may help explain the ways in which health care is provided differently to different people
- enable students to use these theories to critically reflect on evidence and their values, beliefs and attitudes
- introduce qualitative analysis for social and psychological research for evidence-based practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:
- identify psychological, sociological and lifespan factors that influence a variety of health issues and contexts
- identify sociological and psychological issues related to death and dying and end-of-life care
- identify sources and hierarchies of evidence and describe critical thinking frameworks used to promote evidence-based practice
- explore, describe and understand evidence about current issues in health care using psychological and sociological theories
- describe how these theories assist them to make sense of their own beliefs and values about health care
- identify ways in which age, gender, class, race, ethnicity, spirituality and indigeneity influence heath care.
