  • explore theories that may help explain the ways in which health care is provided differently to different people

  • enable students to use these theories to critically reflect on evidence and their values, beliefs and attitudes

  • introduce qualitative analysis for social and psychological research for evidence-based practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify psychological, sociological and lifespan factors that influence a variety of health issues and contexts

  • identify sociological and psychological issues related to death and dying and end-of-life care

  • identify sources and hierarchies of evidence and describe critical thinking frameworks used to promote evidence-based practice

  • explore, describe and understand evidence about current issues in health care using psychological and sociological theories

  • describe how these theories assist them to make sense of their own beliefs and values about health care

  • identify ways in which age, gender, class, race, ethnicity, spirituality and indigeneity influence heath care.
