Topic description
This topic introduces students to a variety of psychological and sociological theories that influence health care and health care provision across the lifespan.
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop in students a beginning understanding of psychological, sociological and lifespan factors that influence a range of health issues and contexts and to explore theories that may help explain the ways in which health care is provided differently to different people.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Determine psychological, sociological and lifespan factors that influence a person’s experience of health issues and contexts
- Distinguish ways in which age, gender, class, race, ethnicity, spirituality and indigeneity influence access to health care
- Critically analyse psychological and sociological theories to inform evidence-based nursing care
- Examine how these theories assist people to make sense of their own beliefs and values
