Topic description
This workshop topic is designed to further skills in theatrical practice and extend experience in independent theatre production. The focus is developing a comprehensive production plan which will include; a detailed production and rehearsal schedule, budget, set and/or costume design, marketing materials and industry and reviewer invitations. There will be a short informal performance at the end of the semester.
Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop students' understanding of the basic skills required to plan an independent production and apply this knowledge to their own project (including Production and Rehearsal Schedules; Budgets; Costume and Set design; Marketing materials; Industry and community communications)
  • Develop students' skills at analysing and interrogating the dramatic meaning of plays and applying this to their own creation of a production plan
  • Develop students’ ability to communicate dramatic meaning through a variety of theatrical languages in performance
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Analyse the dramatic meaning of a play and communicate this meaning through production planning and interpretation of the text in performance
  2. Create a comprehensive production plan for an independent theatre production, following formal, recommended guidelines which includes scheduling, budgeting, communicating with industry and community, marketing and creating set and costume designs
  3. Apply collaboration skills in performance and production planning
  4. Apply and evaluate acting and characterisation skills in the creation and presentation of a performance
