Topic description
Students undertaking this topic will:

  • 1. explore the ethical and legal principles of professional practice that support the promotion of health and wellbeing across the lifespan and

  • 2. develop a beginning ability to apply these principles in relation their own practice as students and registered health professionals in a variety of contexts.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • Develop students understanding and sensitivity to the ethical and legal dimensions of professional practice in health care

  • Develop critical thinking skills that support ethical and legal reasoning about practice

  • Cultivate professional conduct that is ethically and legally defensible

  • Develop students who can clearly articulate their ethical and legal responsibilities to patients and the public

  • Explore the scope of professional practice and acquaint students with the national scheme of regulation that governs their profession

  • Develop skills in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of their health profession’s professional, ethical, and legal standards of practice and regulations that govern their practice

Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • Articulate a strong sense of professional and moral identity

  • Apply an integrated, practical framework for understanding the ethical and legal dimensions to their professional practice

  • Respond to various levels of vulnerability in relationships with those for whom health care is provided

  • Express a personal perspective on ethical and legal issues that relate to duty of care

  • Think critically about specific case studies related to significant contemporary ethical and legal issues in professional practice

  • Demonstrate ethical and legal conduct during professional experience placements within their study program.
