Topic description
This topic focuses on consolidating students’ health assessment and physical examination skills required to provide comprehensive midwifery care. The topic includes the concepts of health education and promotion. Students will build on their scientific knowledge and apply it in their clinical placement.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to introduce students to health assessment and physical examination for midwifery practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate foundational professional and clinical skills for midwifery practice

  2. Apply an understanding of anatomy and physiology to the comprehensive assessment of the childbearing woman

  3. Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the childbearing woman from the initial confirmation of pregnancy through to completion of the puerperium

  4. Demonstrate professional verbal and written communication skills including referral where appropriate.
