Topic description

This topic focuses on interpersonal communication skills that are fundamental to social work practice. It introduces students to the core aspects of the helping relationship and key interpersonal skills for engaging purposefully with people. Students will also consider the use of self in interpersonal communication.

This topic enables students to practice and develop their verbal and non-verbal communication skills including listening, responding, reflecting and questioning. Professional communication, information recording and the appropriate use of communication technologies are also covered.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to the key elements and processes of the helping relationship including engagement and assessment principles
  • Introduce students to the interpersonal and professional skills needed to work with people in human service settings
  • Develop students’ foundational skills for practice with individuals, groups and communities
  • Develop students’ awareness of and capacity to reflect upon the use of self in interpersonal communication
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to able to :

  1. Use basic communication skills to develop rapport and engage people in purposeful conversations
  2. Employ the skills associated with effective practice and assessment including active listening, responding, reflecting and use of questions
  3. Apply written skills to record information accurately, distinguishing between observation and interpretation, and to communicate effectively
  4. Determine potential barriers to effective communication and respond appropriately while considering the use of self in interpersonal practice
  5. Evaluate the potential impacts of diversity (cultural, gender, sexual, dis/ability, etc.) on effective communication
  6. Appraise the use and impacts of technology on communication
