Topic description
This topic introduces students to the foundational scientific knowledge and clinical skills required to care for women and their families experiencing a normal childbearing journey. Students will explore the role of midwives in health settings, including working within multidisciplinary teams. They will develop midwifery competencies and skills for reflective practice in the midwifery laboratory and on clinical placement.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to introduce beginning midwifery clinical practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Develop foundational clinical skills within midwifery practice

  2. Integrate the knowledge of physiology and anatomy of the childbearing woman and her baby

  3. Apply work health and safety policies into clinical practice

  4. Demonstrate a beginning understanding of medical and midwifery terminology and documentation.
