Topic description
This topic is designed to introduce various forms of contemporary dance training, their associated concepts and philosophies. The body of work will explore approaches and structures of training utilised in professional contexts including anatomical design and stylistic interpretation. As part of that genre there will be sessions dedicated to partnering work and improvisation in order to employ these skills and understandings in a range of contexts.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide the students with:

  • The skills necessary in a range of contemporary dance techniques at an increasing level of complexity
  • The necessary physical learning skills and approaches for contemporary dance practice
  • Dance partnering capabilities and skills that can be used in a variety of settings
  • The skills necessary to explore and perform dance improvisation
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a well developed skill level in a range of contemporary dance techniques, styles and approaches
  • Perform dance partnering with confidence, coordination and tactile sensitivity
  • Use a range of strategies to explore and perform various forms of improvisation
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to apply the diversity of methods employed in the field of contemporary dance and adapt to each approach
