Topic description
This topic introduces the Old Testament scriptures, focusing on interpreting them in light of their historical settings, literary forms and leading theological themes. Students will develop skills in the exegesis of biblical texts and explore some of the issues surround the application of the ancient writings to contemporary contexts.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • have the opportunity to read texts from the major sections of the Old Testament
  • develop an understanding of the major types of critical study of the scriptures
  • develop skills in the study of the scriptures
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the topic students will:

  • be able to identify the historical, social, and cultural contexts of the Old Testament writings and their communities
  • have gained a knowledge of the content, historical and geographical setting, literary forms, and the leading theological themes of the Old Testament
  • be able to recognise the Old Testament as literature and the appropriateness of using various interpretative methodologies
  • have explored ways of identifying the relevance of the Old Testament for today
  • have an appreciation of the meaning and significance of the Old Testament for contemporary readers
