Topic description

A broad introduction to the various legal aspects throughout the wine and spirits business life cycle - ranging from the vineyard to the final consumer. This topic reflects the questions, concerns and perspectives that wine and spirits makers and sellers from the industry have highlighted as important for the sector. There is a need to understand what aspects of the law will impact on your business and how to use legal protections to grow your business (use the law to protect and grow your business). The topic identifies the intersection between the legal interests of makers, growers, sellers, consumers and regulators. It will enable you to understand when and where legal responsibilities and risks arise.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with key insight into the:

  • Different sources of law and different types of legal strategies and their relevance to operating within domestic and international wine markets
  • Legal regulatory environment in which domestic and international wine markets operate and how legal disputes may be resolved
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Use appropriate concepts and terms prevalent in international commercial law to apply legal principles pertaining to the international sale of goods, international carriage of goods
  2. Discuss the relevant legal issues faced by wine professionals and the legal imperatives impacting on the wine business sector
  3. Identify the key legal issues that may arise in the wine business life cycle and their different types
  4. Analyse a selection of key legal issues arising across the growing, manufacturing, selling and consuming life cycle
  5. Describe the different approaches available to the resolution of legal disputes
