Topic description

This topic will focus on disability across the life course, from infancy, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, ageing and end of life. We will focus on considerations, challenges, and supports for people with disability at these different life stages. Issues to be covered include: infancy and development; play and schooling; adolescence and independence; transitions to school and work; intimate and social relationships; parenting; transitions to retirement; ageing and end of life considerations.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Examine methods of studying key issues arising for people with disability across the life course
  • Apply major theories of development to disability diversity and to critically evaluate their application in explaining behaviour and learning across the life span
  • Examine the main transitions across the life course for people with disability
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply methods of observation and analysis of results in relation to developmental stages for a child with a disability
  2. Assess theories of development, including their application across various stages of life for people with disability using positive, person first language
  3. Examine change and growth of people with disability across the life course, that is, from infancy, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, ageing and end of life
