Students gain an understanding about the ways in which allied health professionals, such as speech pathologists might apply knowledge about research methods when dealing with a range of communication disorders across a variety of client groups (i.e., children, adults, or the elderly).

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to the scientific method, research designs and methodologies used in the study of human behaviour, human opinions/ judgments and the efficacy of therapy and intervention within the framework of Evidence-Based Practice
  • Provide students with the opportunity to explore the application(s) of research designs and methodologies when testing hypotheses regarding the theories and therapies (interventions) in various speech and language impairment in children, adults or the elderly
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the scientific method, Evidence-Based Practice (in speech pathology) and various research designs and methodologies used in allied health/ speech pathology
  2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the terms, concepts and processes used in the measurement of human behaviour and judgments/perceptions
  3. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the terms, concepts and processes regarding research designs and methodologies used in allied health/speech pathology
  4. Identify the importance of measurement, research design(s) and various research methodologies (both quantitative AND qualitative) for Evidence-Based Practice in allied health/speech pathology
  5. Apply critical reasoning skills with respect to the measurement/assessment of speech and language impairments and the efficacy of therapy provided to clients
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in the clear and precise presentation of the information required in a research grant proposal via the formulation of an empirical question/ hypothesis, a research design, method and plan
