Topic description
This topic will address the issues which a professional needs to understand in order to plan for the health care needs of a person with a disability. Specific information is provided on the causes of disabilities and remedial/educational implications, health care, and medication issues. The aim is to equip students with sufficient knowledge to provide constructive input to team discussions of an individual's health care needs, and sufficient skills to address the personal care and community access needs of people with a range of disabilities.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students to:

  • Identify and examine a range of health issues that may impact the lives of people living with disability

  • Examine the medical and lifestyle management approaches to maximise health and participation in home, community, educational and vocational settings.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and examine the features and prevalence of health care issues often relevant to people with a disability

  2. Investigate and summarize the literature describing medical and lifestyle management approaches used to support the health care needs for people with a disability

  3. Identify accommodations and/or supports to maximise health and participation in home, community, educational and vocational settings.
