Topic description
This topic will provide students with an introduction to human diversity. Students will learn about the ways in which society defines, fosters, recognises and addresses the needs of diverse people. Attitudes towards diversity and the interrelationships between history, society, and needs of diverse persons will also be explored. Students will also reflect on their own attitudes, values, and perspectives when it comes to diversity.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to:

  • Explore the concept of human diversity

  • Examine various socio-demographic factors influencing diversity including age, socio-economic status, culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, and religion

  • Reflect on their own attitudes, values, biases and prejudices, and how these impact on their interactions with others.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply an understanding of how diversity impacts on living and working in a diverse world

  2. Compare and contrast diverse perspectives on social issues

  3. Identify and evaluate their own personal values and attitudes around diversity

  4. Explain how personal values and attitudes around diversity might impact on their interactions with others
