Topic description
This topic provides students with an understanding of the way that a range of cognitive, sensory, neurological and physical disabilities and neuro-diverse conditions affect people with disability. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the human nervous system, while debunking common myths and misconceptions on disability, and identify ways in which people with specific support needs can be supported to lead full lives.
Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Identify the effects of a range of disabilities on people’s lives
  • Identify and describe support strategies and accommodations to support effective learning and inclusion for people with developmental and acquired disabilities
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the basic functions of the human nervous system and the role it plays in cognitive, sensory and physical disabilities and neuro-diverse conditions
  2. Examine best practice support strategies to maximise quality of life for people with intellectual disability, autism spectrum, vision and hearing impairments, sensory processing differences, acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, mental health conditions and seizure disorders
