Topic description
In this topic students will investigate the nature and classification of speech sounds, the international Phonetic Alphabet as relevant to English; writing systems of languages with an important impact on English; the transformation of sounds; foreign words in English; the place of English within the system of related Indo-European languages (and beyond). The question of linguistic influence will be examined through a small case study of the legacy of Latin. No prior knowledge of a language other than English is required or assumed.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • expose students to the basic sound processes of language, particularly in the contemporary context of borrowings

  • develop student confidence in the use of the more common foreign elements now found in English
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able to:

  • identify and explain the nature and classification of speech sounds

  • differentiate and contrast linguistic influences within the system of related Indo-European languages

  • discriminate contemporary English usage with confidence
