This topic begins with an examination of how public health policy is important to the work of government and its role in the social world or governance. It then examines how policy is important to achieving public health goals as described in the global charters, since the emergence of the Ottawa Charter and most recently in the World Health Organisation’s One Health approach. The topic then assesses a range of policy making processes. This will be followed by an introduction to Health in All policies - the origin of this idea, its importance and what it looks like in practice. Finally, the topic examines current examples of policies for health through the framework developed in the other parts of the topic.
This topic aims to introduce students to the interacting factors that shape policies for public health. It will provide a framework through which current policies, directed at achieving health, will be examined.
