On completion of this topic students should have developed an understanding and appreciation of a range of constructions of physical education and aspects and issues in school settings and the wider community. The links with health education will be a focus. A rationale and philosophy of physical education will be further enhanced through assignment work and the involvement in practical applications of the theoretical constructs.

Students will be provided with the opportunity to be introduced to:

• the field of Physical Education and thereby establish the foundations for further study in this area

• a broad understanding of the philosophical, historical, physiological, motorlogical, biomechanical, sociological, psychological, political, educational and pedagogical concepts underlying current practice in Physical Education and its application in school and community settings

• the links between physical education and health education

On completing this topic students should be able to demonstrate, at a foundational level:

• an understanding of the philosophical, historical, physiological, motorlogical, biomechanical, sociological, psychological, political, educational and pedagogical concepts underlying current practice in Physical Education

• an understanding and appreciation of the aspects and issues related to physical education in the community, especially in school settings

• proficiency in a range of pedagogical skills related to physical education in school settings

• an understanding and appreciation of the links between physical education and health education
