Topic description

The topic draws on social theory to develop the foundations of a sociological understanding of health and the practice of health education.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to the concepts of health and health education using a social view of health
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Have a broad understanding of the philosophical concepts underlying current practice in Health Education in schools and community settings
  2. Conceptualise health education
  3. Demonstrate they understand that health status is shaped by social issues
  4. Discuss a range of health theories
  5. Describe the relationship between class and health inequalities
  6. Conduct investigations about the health outcomes of specific groups- Indigenous people, those in remote locations etc
  7. Work collaboratively and present well researched information
