Topic description
The topic draws on social theory to develop the foundations of a sociological understanding of health and the practice of health education.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- Introduce students to the concepts of health and health education using a social view of health
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Have a broad understanding of the philosophical concepts underlying current practice in Health Education in schools and community settings
- Conceptualise health education
- Demonstrate they understand that health status is shaped by social issues
- Discuss a range of health theories
- Describe the relationship between class and health inequalities
- Conduct investigations about the health outcomes of specific groups- Indigenous people, those in remote locations etc
- Work collaboratively and present well researched information
