Topic description
This topic introduces the domain of simulation and serious gaming. The engineering process behind this style of interaction experience will be the core of this topic. With an early focus on fundamental theory and design issues the topic will culminate in the development of functional assets for a real world scenario. The topic will introduce material discussing development methodologies, the appropriateness of reality within the simulation and game context, the effective use of real world environments, interaction technologies, decision mechanics, and customisation opportunities.
Educational aims
The topic aims to provide students with:

  1. A sound understanding of the design process behind simulations and serious games
  2. The comprehension of the function, design and implementation issues surrounding these environments
  3. An appreciation for the ethical and professional issues surrounding the use of simulations and serious games
  4. Practical exposure to the human-computer interaction features of such technology
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the fundamental concepts of simulation and serious games
  2. Describe the nature of the design process for simulation and serious games applications
  3. Contribute to the production of design documentation for a simulated or serious game environment
  4. Develop functional computer-based interactive experiences
  5. Understand the social and ethical implication of the application of simulations and serious games
  6. Display an appreciation of the nature of teamwork in relation to interactive simulation and serious game development
