Topic description

This topic will examine the evidence-base for the communication of science, in particular from the perspective of the audience. Students will explore the variety and effects of audience experiences when science is communicated to them in different contexts and for different purposes. The psychologies of perception, cognitions and decision-making.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of:

  • Learning principles and basic cognitive processes
  • Interactions between people and science communication processes
  • The different types, styles and media through which science can be communicated
  • The ways in which individuals react differently to the communication of science, with a focus on processes internal to the individual
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Use knowledge of learning principles and basic cognitive processes to predict and analyse audience responses to science communications
  2. Compare, contrast and critically evaluate science communication activities from the perspective of a range of audiences
  3. Design science communications for specific target audiences and purposes, and justify decisions made
