Assumed knowledge
It will be assumed that students have an understanding of fabric construction, fibre type and basic garment construction. Knowledge of the design principles are also required.
Topic description
The garment and fashion industry is dynamic and mirrors society's evolution. Art, technology, economics and society’s concerns are all reflected in what we wear. This topic will examine these and other influences on costume/fashion, with the aim of equipping students with the ability to understand why trends are successful. From this, ways in which future trends can be predicted are considered.
Educational aims
This topic aims to give students the opportunity to:

  • create a visual diary which records ideas which may influence future designs.

  • explore the technology, economics and politics of society to determine how they influenced clothing of a particular era.

  • explore art movements and their impact on historical costume.

  • relate the outcome of students’ research to future trends.

  • examine the development and status of Australia in the world of fashion.

  • communicate ideas with their peers and debate theories and solutions
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • the ability to identify the items of clothing worn in the past, from particular epochs

  • the ability to trace garment evolution in terms of contemporary social, economic and political environments.

  • the ability to determine factors which can impact on contemporary garments, including predicting future trends

  • the ability to discuss aspects relating to the history of the Australian fashion industry and the principle participants

  • the ability to analyse current designers who have taken influence from historical and ethnic costume, and how it has been reinterpreted in garment design

  • the ability to communicate ideas and research to others both verbally and in writing, including the use of multimedia
