Topic description

This topic begins with the genesis of the book and examines its permutations through history, up to modern practice in publishing. It considers a number of ethical, practical and theoretical matters such as censorship, national identity through public policy on literature, the role of the editor and publisher, and the place of small presses. The impact of new technology is also considered, since it is arguably a significant element in determining the future of publishing. The topic will appeal to students involved in creative writing in the areas of fiction and non-fiction, and who have an eye on work in the publishing industry.

This topic aims to:

  • Examine editing practices within (and beyond) the modern publishing industry
