For students taking a major in Indonesian language, this topic is recommended for their first year of study.
Topic description
The topic will introduce Indonesian societies and cultures including indigenous communities and belief systems, Hindu Bali, the religion of Java, the place of Islam, the impact of colonialism and the West, legacies of the revolution and the Sukarno and Suharto years. Gender, development, human rights and environmental issues will also be addressed
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- introduce students with a broad understanding of the culture, society and politics of Indonesia
- introduce the religions of Indonesia, and their influences on Indonesian society and communities
- develop an understanding of the influences of colonialism and politics on Indonesian society
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- Discuss the diversity of languages and cultures in Indonesia
- Identify the essential elements of different cultural communities and religions
- Compare the influences of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam on Indonesia
- Analyse the legacies of Dutch colonial rule, the Indonesian revolution, and the Independence period
- Gain a better understanding of Indonesian development issues
- Discuss the main themes in modern Indonesian literature through the writings of Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
