This topic will introduce students to the processes of disease and injury in the human body. It builds on knowledge acquired in NURS1004 Physical Dimensions of Being Human and NURS1005 Applied Science in Professional Practice (PEP).

The aims of this topic are to:

• Apply knowledge of pathophysiological and pharmacological concepts to acute and chronic health conditions across the lifespan

• Demonstrate an understanding of the association between the disease process, pharmacology and nursing practice

• Develop and apply critical thinking and analysis skills to develop an understanding of the disease trajectory and the implications of nursing management.

On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

• Examine the processes of disease or injury trajectory drawn from selected Australian health priorities
• describe the potential trajectory related to the process of palliative care, in conjunction with the available evidence

• Explain and articulate the clinical reasoning behind the signs and symptoms that manifest during the disease process and the dynamic changes of the illness trajectory

• Examine the role of pharmacology to treat illness through the analysis of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in relation to patient treatment

• Analyse contemporary nursing practice in conjunction with the available evidence on pharmacological interventions and the impact on pathophysiology, patient therapy and patient outcomes.
