Topic description

This topic provides a foundation of the application of the theoretical underpinnings of methodologies used in ESL teaching to the practice of teaching. It focuses on critical analysis of the adaptation of methodologies, and a reflective approach to the self-evaluation of practice. Critical analysis of theory, policy and application of these is explored and original and creative recommendations arising out of this exploration is examined, resulting in an original and creative approach to practice.

Students may have the option of completing a 10 hour practicum. Practicums and their assessment are to be organised in consultation with the topic coordinator.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Promote an awareness of approaches that inform classroom methodology
  • Encourage creative planning of classroom learning experiences
  • Highlight the relationship between learner motivation and successful learning outcomes
  • Encourage critical thinking about methodologies as used in ESOL
  • Promote a reflective approach to practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the skills necessary to apply a cohesive unit of study
  2. Apply daily lesson plans in order to achieve the learning outcomes of the whole unit
  3. Identify day-to-day strategies which facilitate positive classroom experiences
