Topic description

This is an introductory topic in which students develop skills in the analysis of social policy, including policy debates and policy making processes. Students will be introduced to policy advocacy and macro system change.

Educational aims

This topic aims to introduce students to the field of social policy. This includes reasons for social policy, how social policy is made and how social policy impacts on the lives of the people with whom social workers work. It includes consideration of how social policy impacts on the roles and functions of social work.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Discuss the key aspects of social policy making and its influence on service delivery
  2. Critically analyse current social policy and its impact on the people with whom social workers work
  3. Apply skills in policy advocacy and practice to various social issues
