This topic contextualises the role of the nurse in the professional practice setting. It encompasses the introduction and application of knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology and pharmacology as related to nursing care. Promotion of clinical reasoning and critical thinking towards the development of the knowledge and skills to support professional experience placement form the cornerstone of this topic. This topic includes a professional experience placement where students transfer and enact their knowledge and skills in the clinical setting.

This topic introduces students to the role of the registered nurse within the multidisciplinary healthcare system. Students are introduced to elements of anatomy & physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, clinical nursing and professional skills. These knowledge domains will facilitate development of the clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills essential to being a nurse and are applied during professional experience placement for continued learning and development.

On successful completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

Develop and build knowledge of the basic anatomy and physiology of major bodily systems
Construct and make use of fundamental nursing practise skills for contextualised nursing care
Apply clinical reasoning and critical thinking to effectively plan and enact nursing practise, integrating pathophysiology, microbiology and pharmacology knowledge
Apply appropriate therapeutic and professional communication skills to nursing practise and within an interdisciplinary healthcare team
Integrate foundational knowledge and skills to diverse nursing contexts for collaborative planning and decision making within healthcare teams
Develop and Integrate foundational knowledge of professional documentation and verbal communication skills (ISBAR and TeamSTEPPS).
