Topic description
This topic equips students with a sound knowledge of maternal and infant nutrition. The topic relates to a women's physiological adjustment to pregnancy and lactation and her nutritional needs and related midwifery care. The topic also addresses the knowledge required for nutrition related to the newborn and growing infant. Infant feeding, both breastfeeding and formula feeding will be examined.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to introduce students to the science and practice of optimising maternal and infant nutrition in pregnancy and the postpartum period. This topic will build on students existing knowledge of anatomy and physiology, health promotion and midwifery practice.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected tol be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of the science of human nutrition and physiology to the midwifery management of maternal and infant nutrition
  • Discuss evidence based practice strategies to overcome barriers and optimise maternal and infant nutrition
  • Compare and contrast methods of infant feeding
  • Explain public health initiatives to enhance optimal maternal and infant nutrition
  • Examine the midwifery management of postpartum women and their baby(s) with feeding complexities
  • Describe the role of midwifery counselling in the management of maternal and infant nutrition
