Topic description

This topic introduces students to the Australian Health Care System, evidence-based practice and research, professional, ethical, and legal standards of practice and the psychological, sociological and lifespan factors that influence a person's experience of health issues and contexts./p

Educational aims

This topic aims to explore and construct an understanding of the professional knowledge, skills and attributes required for a Registered Nurse as determined by the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards of Practice, Code of conduct and Code of ethics for nurses, and relevant State and National legislation within the Australian Healthcare context This topic introduces regional, national and global health priorities, standards for safety and quality in health care and evidence based practice in health.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Examine primary health care models and the role of the interprofessional health care team within diverse healthcare settings and contexts
  2. Determine psychological, sociological and lifespan factors that influence a person's experience of health issues and contexts
  3. Apply an integrated, practical framework for understanding the ethical and legal dimensions to their professional practice
  4. Evaluate the role of research in health and the role of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the provision of patient care, quality and safety and clinical governance
