This topic focuses on the core elements social work practice. It introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to engage effectively with individuals, families, groups, organisations and communities in their first field education placement. Students will develop an understanding of the 'core conditions' of the helping relationship. They will practice 'tuning in', active listening, questioning, verbal and non-verbal communication and structuring an interview. Students will learn about the social work process of engagement, assessment, planning, intervention, ending and evaluation. They will practice recording and managing information, and critically reflecting on social work interviews.

This topic aims to:

Introduce students to the knowledge and skills needed to relate effectively with individuals, families, groups, organisations, and communities
Develop students' understanding of fields and organisational contexts of social work and professional practice within these contexts
Identify different phases of social work intervention
Introduce a basic ethical and professional framework of practice

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Integrate the necessary knowledge and skills to initiate and build therapeutic alliance

Conduct a social work interview with individuals in a manner that demonstrates beginning level capabilities

Apply the social work process of engagement, assessment, planning, intervention, ending and evaluation

Integrate ethical and professional considerations and skills while recording and managing information

Critically reflect on own social work practice
