Assumed knowledge
It is assumed that students will have a basic understanding of the foundational sciences for midwives and human anatomy and physiology of reproduction (HLTH1004 /MIDW1014 and MIDW1008/MIDW1018) gained from the topics studied in the first year of the Bachelor of Midwifery.

Topic description
This topic focuses on the significance of pharmacology and medication management in pregnancy, labour and birth, the postpartum period and the neonatal care. The topic will address aspects of pharmacology of prescribed and non-prescribed drugs, including complementary therapies, over-the-counter drugs and recreational drugs. This will enable students to integrate principles of pharmacology and medication management into their midwifery practice.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with knowledge, skills and competence in clinical pharmacology and medication administration in midwifery practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the effect of pregnancy on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

  2. Apply knowledge of commonly prescribed drug groups in midwifery practice (pharmacotherapy) for the childbearing woman, fetus and neonate

  3. Apply the scientific basis of drug interactions and polypharmacy to clinical practice

  4. Identify and critically analyse medication management of the pregnant woman using evidence based practice

  5. Identify and critically analyse ethical and legal issues in medication management.
