Assumed knowledge
Students are expected to have an understanding of Pages (2006) five steps for evidence-based midwifery and an ability to critically analyse research articles.

Topic description
This topic will enable midwifery students to critically examine professional practice and clinical guidelines in relation to their analysis of contemporary research evidence.
Educational aims
The aim of the topic is to enhance midwifery student’s ability to critically analyze research evidence for translation to clinical and professional practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically examine the relevance and translation of Page’s five steps of evidence-based midwifery to clinical and professional practice

  2. Apply sources of high-quality evidence for practice

  3. Examine the process of writing a research proposal

  4. Examine the relationship between a literature review and the development of a research idea into a proposal

  5. Appraise clinical guidelines commonly used in maternity practice

  6. Apply issues in maternity care that lend themselves to research.
