Assumed knowledge
It is assumed the students will have a sound knowledge of midwifery care for women with an uncomplicated pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum period. The student will have a basic understanding of the sciences that relate to midwifery practice and midwifery skills.
Course context

Topic description
This topic will focus on the midwifery care of the childbearing woman with complex maternity needs or requiring emergency care. This topic includes professional experience placements in related midwifery clinical areas.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to prepare the student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for women with complex maternity needs or requiring emergency care.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Identify deviations from normal during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period
  2. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care of the woman with complex maternity needs or requiring emergency care
  3. Apply knowledge of research evidence, clinical sciences and pharmacology to inform decision making and clinical midwifery practice
  4. Discuss the importance of multi-disciplinary care and appropriate referral to provide care of women with complex maternity needs
  5. Identify and interpret guidelines, policy and legislation in relation to midwifery practice in complex situations
  6. Describe and interpret investigations and diagnostic tests that may be ordered for the woman with complex maternity needs
  7. Demonstrate a beginner-level of competence for midwifery care of women with complex maternity needs
