Topic description

This topic provides students with an understanding of the key processes involved in the production of different wine styles in the Australian context. Students will also gain an understanding of the Australian wine landscape and will learn about the different types of product and production variabilities in the local wine industry. The topic also explains the influence and importance of Australia’s numerous wine regions through directed and self-directed study and sensory assessment of some of Australia’s typical wine styles. The topic also covers the processes and basic costs of winemaking, problems caused by common wine faults, and the importance of winery efficiency in the context of business returns and environmental stewardship.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the key processes involved in the production of different wine styles in the Australian context, including the various costs involved in the many stages of product development and retail; potential problems and how to manage or mitigate against them. Students will gain insight into the range of considerations needed when establishing wine grape growing business from grape to table.
