SCME2102 Gender, Media, and Technology

This topic explores representations of gender and sexuality across a variety of media and technologies, paying particular attention to how the design, production, and consumption of various technologies have affected men and women differently. We investigate how the intersection of gender, media, and technology both reproduces and challenges existing social and cultural relations of power, and discover how various feminist, media, and technology scholars have responded to this cluster of problems.

This topic aims to:

• Assist students in recognising and critiquing gender-oriented myths and ideologies produced by media and technologies
• Assist in the development of students' skills in media analysis
• Develop students skills in engaging with relevant academic texts and discourses
• Encourage students to improve their research skills and use of a variety of source texts
• Develop students ability to present their learning both orally and in writing
• Ensure that students are able to participate actively and engage constructively in tutorial activities
• Develop students ability to engage in collaborative activity
