Assignments, Tests, Tutorial Participation

The topic introduces students to theory and research in psychology that informs our understanding of psychological responses to health and illness. It applies a range of psychological perspectives to health settings including: acute and chronic illness, grief and loss, stress and coping, research, health behaviour change, and health promotion.

The topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the importance of psychology to a range of health-related settings. It also aims to provide opportunities to apply health and developmental psychology theories to inform our understanding of health and illness.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Identify psychological influences on how people stay healthy, why they become ill and how they respond when ill
2. Apply health and developmental psychology theories to help understand responses to health and illness
3. Explain the impact of health crises on psychological development
4. Identify and explain psychological factors that influence people’s responses to health and illness across the lifespan
5. Critically evaluate evidence from a range of psychological resources.
