Topic description
This topic provides a conceptual framework as well as practical information on the basic issues and special concerns associated with securing and maintaining meaningful employment experiences for individuals with disabilities. Attention is given to specific employment strategies and techniques such as: vocational assessment, career development, self-determination, job placement, job instruction, social inclusion and the provision of ongoing support. Students will learn to apply research findings to employment and rehabilitation practice and develop and implement specific support strategies.
Educational aims
This topic aims to assist students to develop:

  • Knowledge and skills to effectively assist individuals with disabilities to access and maintain meaningful employment experiences

  • A repertoire of specific employment support strategies.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and explore the issues facing individuals with disabilities as they attempt to access and maintain meaningful employment

  2. Evaluate the roles/responsibilities of employment professionals in assisting people with disabilities to gain meaningful employment

  3. Determine a variety of work and employment options for those with disability

  4. Offer suggestions for improvement on the impact of various legislative and policy reforms on the employment outcomes of people with disabilities.
