Topic description
This topic involves a study of the origins and history of the Uniting Church in Australia, and the nature of its beliefs and polity. It will also consider the theology, distinctive characteristics, and declared mission of the Uniting Church in Australia.
Educational aims
  • to explore the origins and history of the Uniting Church in Australia, and the nature of its beliefs and polity
  • to explore of the theology, distinctive characteristics, and declared mission of the Uniting Church in Australia
  • to analyse the 'Basis of Union', with a view to ascertaining the UCA’s theological position vis-a-vis other Christian denominations in Australia, the identification of the range of its missional activities, its place in the ecumenical movement, its interpretation of the relationship between gospel and justice, the order of its various ministries, and its polity
Expected learning outcomes
After completing this topic students will be able to:

  • describe the origins, nature and purpose of the Uniting Church in Australia
  • identify the differences between the major Christian denominations of the Christian Church in Australia
  • discuss the importance of the ecumenical movement as a practical expression of God's act of reconciliation in Christ, and to understand Church union as an essential part of the gospel imperative
  • explain how the process that led to the formation of the Uniting Church was conceived as an attempt to answer the call of God to be renewed in faith and mission
  • analyse the tension between tradition and mission in the ongoing life of churches, and the Uniting Church's attempt to model the principle that structures must be the servant of mission
  • describe the role of the Church as an expression of God's mission in the world
