Topic description
The development of visual art theory and practice from Antiquity to 2009 will be investigated and critically examined. The major themes and history of the western world will be explored and the changing modes of expression which reflect social and cultural contexts will be analysed.
Educational aims
This topic:

  • introduces students to the major themes and history of Western art from Antiquity to 2009

  • provides students with the opportunity to analyse the changing modes of representation and meaning and to reflect on the changing social and cultural contexts of visual arts
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • articulate their own ideas about the development of Visual art theory and practice

  • demonstrate their understanding of social and cultural contexts of visual art
