PHCA2509 Promoting Health in Social Planning

The topic explores the long relationship between population health and the theories and practices that have influenced the planning of cities and places within cities. It looks at the multiple effects the design of our cities, suburbs and neighbourhood have upon population health, wellbeing, and health equity. The topic provides an opportunity for students to consider the links between urban design and public health at the local level within and outside Australia.

To provide an opportunity to explore foundation theories, concepts and models of health promotion related to urban environments and a range of health promoting skills applicable to social and urban planning.

1. Interpret the concerns that have influenced urban planning theories and the design of urban environments
2. Recognise the effects urban environments and their planning can, and have had, on health and health equity
3. Identify, investigate and evaluate the social and environmental determinants of health and health equity in urban environments
