Topic description
The subject of reconciliation is key to Christian theology. This topic seeks to explore the theologies of alienation and reconciliation using the context of relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Australia as a case study.In years when available, a field trip may be made to visit an Indigenous community.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:
- introduce students to the concept of alienation as a theology of sinfulness and reconciliation as a soteriological device and outcome.
- investigate the relationship between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians and reflect upon the history of relationship in light of concepts of alienation and reconciliation.
- discuss how theology can inform the ongoing social and political debate about reconciliation
Expected learning outcomes
At the conclusion of this topic students will be able to:
- identify the biblical and theological basis of theologies of alienation and reconciliation
- explain the way in which concepts of alienation and reconciliation apply both human to human, and God to humanity.
- apply the theological concepts of alienation and reconciliation to the history of relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
