Topic description
  1. History of Industrial Design - understanding of early manufacturer/customer relationships, the Industrial Revolution, the emergence of Standards and precision manufacturing (the first lathe, hand tools, the first CNC machine, etc, etc, through to rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Form vs. Function and Form vs. Materials
  2. Service Science and Systems Engineering - theory, techniques and current practice
  3. Materials, processes, fabrication techniques, assembly, testing, design for failure, product standards and their role in design and engineering, procurement, shipping, delivery, service, repair, asset management
  4. Sustainable design, ergonomics/human factors, branding, optimising cost, quality, reliability, safety, time-to-market, and customer satisfaction
  5. Manufacturing design technologies - Finite Element Analysis (FEA), simulation and modelling
Educational aims
To provide a solid understanding of the theory and many of the techniques of design as applied to technological development.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the historical and current trends in industrial design
  2. Apply appropriate techniques and tools relating to service science and systems engineering
  3. Understand the basics of engineering materials as they apply to fabrication and assembly processes
  4. Understand the ideas underpinning ergonomics and sustainable design
