SPOC2702 Science and Influence

This topic will explore different approaches for purposeful communication. Themes covered include identifying stakeholders, why values matter, how to foster constructive debate online, science communication vs science PR, and how scientific information can be incorporated into decision making. Through working on a series of science communication challenges based on current issues, students will develop skills in persuasive writing, planning and producing video content and an understanding of different approaches for community engagement with real-life case studies.

This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of:

• Purposeful communication, and the causes and effects of types of messaging
• The application of different communication types, styles and media
• Social and individual belief systems, and of group and personal motivation
• The relationship between a communicator and an audience before, during and after any communication
