Topic description
This topic gives an introduction to Biblical (Koine) Greek. Students are introduced to the grammar and vocabulary of Koine Greek, learn to read and translate some passages of the New Testament and gain an understanding of the different insights which the study of this ancient language can offer.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • gain basic skills in and knowledge of biblical (Koine) Greek
  • learn how to understand grammar, with a focus on verbal forms
  • learn how to use lexicographical aids to assist in translation and parsing

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have:

  • demonstrated understanding of the basic grammar of Koine Greek
  • the requisite skills and vocabulary to translate short passages from the Greek New Testament, with appropriate lexicographical aids
  • demonstrated an understanding of English grammar
  • the skills to use biblical commentaries that refer to the Greek text
