Topic description
Using a series of case studies this topic introduces students to knowledge of the aetiology, nature, prognosis, mechanisms and course of voice and swallowing disorders. On completion of the topic students should be able to answer the following questions: How do we produce voice? How do we swallow? What is dysphagia? How might swallowing break down? What is the impact of having difficulties with voice and/or swallowing? How is dysphagia diagnosed and treated? How are problems with the voice diagnosed and treated?
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- Prepare students for assessing and treating swallowing disorders across the life span
- Provide a sound theoretical background in the evaluation of the normal and disordered voice, instrumental methods of analysis, and management of voice disorders
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Describe the anatomy and functional physiology and factors that influence development of normal voice, feeding/eating and swallowing
- Explain how social, gender and emotional factors can influence normal voice
- Explain the perceptual, acoustic and physiologic components of normal voice
- Discuss the normal variations in swallowing as a function of variables including age, bolus characteristics and positioning
- Explain the aetiology, nature, incidence, prevalence, prognosis, mechanisms and course of various voice and swallowing disorders
- Describe the impact of voice disorders, H&N cancer and/or dysphagia on quality of life using the WHO/ICF model
- Discuss implications for safety, nutrition and hydration of swallowing difficulties
- Describe the process involved evaluation of voice and feeding / swallowing difficulties
- Describe the different approaches required for the management of organic and functional voice disorders (inc. muscle tension and psychogenic)
- Describe a range of evidence-based therapeutic techniques and medico-surgical approaches for organic and functional voice disorders and specific groups
- Discuss medico-legal issues related to dysphagia or voice disorders
