Topic description
In this topic students will gain an understanding of how structure and function of the human body are affected by key pathological conditions in the three core areas of musculoskeletal practice, cardiorespiratory practice and neurological rehabilitation for physiotherapists. The process of pathology, injury and healing will be examined in relation to key orthopaedic, rheumatological, cardiorespiratory and neurological conditions.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide the student with background knowledge of the overall medical and /or surgical management of key pathological conditions in the three core areas of physiotherapy practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of pathology, healing and repair in key orthopaedic, rheumatological, cardiorespiratory and neurological conditions
- Understand the key signs and symptoms associated with these key conditions
- Gain an overview of the general management of these key conditions
- Reflect on the role of the physiotherapist within the health care team in relation to simple case management
